About
In December 2019, the EU Commission presented the European Green Deal as “a new growth strategy that aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050”. The topic is directly connected with the Commission’s strategy to implement the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda and the priorities announced in President von der Leyen’s political guidelines. The Commission expresses the need to rethink policies to deliver the European Green Deal and provide “intense coordination to exploit the available synergies across all policy areas”.
The European Green Deal entails the agricultural and food sector as being key to managing the transformation. In May 2020, the Commission presented the ‘Farm to Fork’ and the “Biodiversity” Strategies that will strengthen efforts to tackle climate change, protect the environment, and preserve biodiversity. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) under negotiation will remain a key supporting instrument and is expected to contribute to climate action.
This interdisciplinary project, entitled “EU Law on Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture after the European Green Deal - SUSTAIN” aims to promote EU actions on sustainable and climate-smart agriculture through : training courses, seminars, workshops, and a final conference both for students and professionals. Teaching will combine legal and policy studies with experimentation in an interdisciplinary environment (covering law, politics, and ICT).
